Northern Ground-hornbills

IUCN SSC Hornbill Specialist Group's projected impact for the 2017-2020 quadrennium states.

“The HSG aims to have definitive conservation plans in place for all Critically Endangered (CR) and Endangered (EN) hornbill species in both Asia and Africa, with implementation agencies supported by the HSG to meet their targets”.

The IUCN Hornbill Specialist Group and the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project determined it critical to launch an active conservation plan for the Abyssinian Ground-hornbill. The ongoing global hornbill population decline, which has resulted in most taxa becoming locally endemic and others approaching extinction, necessitates a rapid inventory of all hornbill taxa worldwide for effective status assignment. The Abyssinian Ground-hornbill Project (Ghana) will serve as a scientific model for future Abyssinian Ground-hornbill projects throughout their range.

A five-year action plan has been designed in stages, starting with studies of their habitat preferences, breeding ecology and population structure. This information is required to develop policies for conservation planning and action.
