Improve

Improve and retain the capacity, efficiency and stability of MGHP

Enable it to continue to make a long-term contribution to conservation in South Africa and beyond. Build capacity locally, regionally, and nationally, through the provision of training, mentorship and, where possible, funding.

At the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, our mission is to enhance our capacity, efficiency, and stability to ensure a lasting contribution to ground-hornbill conservation. We are dedicated to building local, regional, and national capabilities through comprehensive training, mentorship, and securing long-term funding support for ground-hornbill conservation.

Key initiatives include:

  • Increasing Awareness: We aim to raise awareness of our work and emphasize the importance of the Southern Ground-hornbill to a broader audience, both nationally and internationally.
  • Securing Long-Term Funding: Sustainability is crucial, and we are actively working to secure funding that supports our initiatives for long-term conservation viability.
  • Internships and Capacity Building: We offer internships to South African students to develop the skills necessary for an effective career in conservation.
  • Upholding Ethical Standards: Our commitment to maintaining the highest conservation ethical codes, through advocacy, awareness and standard development where standards are lacking.
  • Streamlining Operations: We continually improve our business and logistical management to enhance overall efficiency.
  • Developing solutions to human-wildlife conflict: Addressing lead in the environment, rehabilitating poisoned birds, developing solutions for window breaking, and electrocution on electrical infrastructure.
  • Predator Protection: Implementing protective measures to safeguard nests from predators and electrical infrastructure.
  • Illegal Trade: Investigating the effects of species trade and exploring bespoke solutions for property damages from wildlife.
